Blogpost 6: Free Topic 2

My experience being vegan.
Since I was little I was always an animal lover and I was always aware that I should not mistreat them, much less eat them, but since I come from a traditional family they always forced me to eat meat because it was normal and because "it did me good". However one day the idea to stop eating animals came to my head and that thought went around in my head for a long time but I did not dare to do it since at that time it depended on what my grandmother cooked and I did not know cooking very well, until one day I told them that I did not want to eat any more meat so I did it, but everyone was quite surprised and thought that I was going to starve, about all my grandparents since they are from the countryside and are not used to vegetarianism, much less veganism. They told the other family members that I had "become" a vegetarian as if it were something crazy and many believed that it was wrong, that it was something very rushed and that it would not do me good, but I did not care about the opinion of the others because my conscience was calm when not eating animals and also had informed me enough. One day I decided to be a vegan and that shocked them much more when they did not eat dairy or eggs or anything related to animals. But veganism goes beyond not eating animals, it is being an activist against animal abuse, not using products tested on animals, not speciesism, etc. Some may think that it is something extreme but some think that it is something of justice. We don't need cow's milk, we need the calcium that we can get from other foods like broccoli or almonds, we don't need the protein from meat, we can get it from legumes that are much healthier, and so with many other foods that can be easily replaced, it is just motivation and you get well informed. Finally my family understood after many years that I don't need to risk another living being to feed myself well.
I love french fries!
Animals are with us not for us. ❤

  2. Good for you that you know how to manage being a vegan because it requires some knowledge--for example the sources of certain micronutrients to replace animal sources (such as legumes, like you mentioned).
